Frequently Asked Questions:

* Who is the SVBC - the Silicon Valley Basketball Club?

Founded in 1987, SVBC aims to promote and encourage youths to participate in competitive basketball and to develop their skills in leadership, teamwork, sportsmanship and physical health. Our objective is to provide support for organized amateur basketball sporting events, to reserve training sites, and to provide athletic, recreational, and social activities for its members.

In 2019, SVBC High School players organized the SVBC Youth Committee to coach the SVBC Clinics, Summer Camps and Development Programs. You are currently reading the information about the SVBC Development Programs, NOT the SVBC Competitive Teams. For SVBC Competitive Teams, please talk to one SVBC Volunteer Parents at the Development Program class, we will be glad to provide you with more information about the SVBC club, its Competitive Teams, and how to tryout.

* What are the SVBC Development Programs?

SVBC Development Programs are for children K-3th graders who like to play basketball, and start to play at recreational level. The Programs are mainly for basketball fundamental skill training and development.

SVBC Development Programs are held in 2 seasons:

   - Spring Season from mid-January to end-May

   - Fall Season from mid-August to early-December

Currently there are 4 SVBC Development Programs to choose from in Spring and Fall seasons:

- Program 1:  For 1st-2nd Grade boys and girls, Sunday morning 9-11 am at Meyerholz Elementary School outdoor court

- Program 2:  For Kindergarten-1st grade boys, Sunday morning 9-11 am at Dilworth Elementary School outdoor court

* How to sign up my child to the SVBC Development Program?

1. Filling out the registration form

2. Tryout: bring your child to the Program for a tryout at the first class of the season

3. Decide: If coach accepts your child, would you join and commit to the season?

4. Pay: Commit and pay in full of the whole season after the tryout/first class

* Does every player need to go through tryout?

Yes. For SVBC Development Programs, tryout is for the parent and kid to try and experience the SVBC basketball programs, to see if your child likes the basketball training, AND for the coach to see if the player is coachable. Development Program tryout is not for the coach to evaluate a child's basketball skill level, nor athleticism, physical talent or size. After coach accept your child, he/she is joining the SVBC Development Program, not the SVBC Competitive Team. To join the team, your child has to go through multiple tryouts when basketball skills, teamwork, athleticism, physical talent and size, etc will all be evaluated multiple times by the team coach(s).

* What are difference between SVBC Development Programs and SVBC Competitive Teams?

- Development Programs are in recreational level, while Competitive Teams are in competitive level

- Most players who show interested in basketball and listen to the coaches will be accepted to the Development Programs, while Competitive Teams are very selective, and must go through multiple tryouts and show exceptional basketball skills, athleticism and/or size, and high commitment to the team.

- Development programs are mainly for fundamental basketball skill and teamwork training, while Competitive Teams are for advanced basketball skill training, teamwork and game preparations and participations.

- Development Programs are coached by qualified and experienced SVBC high school players, while Competitive Teams are coached by qualified and experienced professional adult coaches

 - Development Programs are held on out-door basketball courts, while Competitive Team practices and games are held in local in-door gyms.

* Who are the coaches for the SVBC Development Programs?

Coaches are SVBC High School players who have been playing in the SVBC Competitive Teams for many seasons.

In addition, they have been coaching for the SVBC Development Programs, Summer Camps, and Clinics for many seasons too. Each program will have multiple High School Coaches. If needed, coaches will divide the players into groups of different skill levels and/or ages. The typical coach-to-player ratio is no more than 1:10, younger programs is 1:8.

* Will there be any basketball games for the SVBC Development Programs?

Depend on grades, there will be some scrimmages or fun games during the class. But players will not be participating in any league games. With this said, some parents with similar grade and skill level children can form team to sign-up for local basketball league games or tournaments. Please see SVBC Volunteer Officers for more information.

* Where are the Development Programs?

Development Programs are usually held on the outdoor basketball courts in Cupertino/West San Jose elementary and middle schools. SVBC Basketball Summer Camp will be held in in-door gym in West San Jose area.

* How do I know if my child is accepted to the Program?

After the tryout, please see the coaches and SVBC volunteer parents for feedback.

* How much does the program cost and how do I pay for the program?

After the tryout, if you decide to join the Program and coach accept your child, please commit and pay for the full season.

Cash or Check is the preferred payment method. Please talk to the volunteer team manager for other payment methods.

After the tryout, if you decide NOT to join the program, please pay the $25 tryout fee.
